You’ve had the inspiration to start a blog for the longest time & you are pretty much excited. There’s so much you want to share with your potential new readers and you just can’t wait to launch your blog and air your first post. I know the excitement I’ve been there. But before you start your blog, consider both sides of the blogging life and weigh them against your own personality, lifestyle and ambitions.
See what fits you and be honest about what YOU really want out of the experience. I love blogging and bloggers alike but here are 4 facts I wish I considered before starting a blog.
1. ITS REALLY HARD WORK
Running a blog isn’t a piece of cake.Successful bloggers – I’m talking about bloggers running on 6 figure incomes- may make it look easy, but you rarely see what’s going on behind the scenes. Behind the great themes and posts, aesthetic pictures, snappy write-ups is a whole heap of stress, hustle and long working hours.
For a blog to thrive, expect yourself to be working more often. And those hours often extend into the evenings and weekends when you’d normally be relaxing.
Staying on top of your game in blogging takes dedication, diligence, commitment and Patience- I’ve learnt over the past few months that you can’t rush your success in blogging.
2. YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IS AT STAKE
With blogging there is the over-use of social media and that risks your mental health. While there are positive aspects of social media such as connecting with your audience on social platforms, sharing your life and celebrating your victories – the amount of time you spend online as a blogger can be unhealthy.
There is a definitely a balance to this – I frankly haven’t mastered it yet and whenever I feel like I’m getting social anxiety or I’m loosing touch with my reality I take breaks for some- days, weeks and sometimes months.
Many bloggers, including myself, have the habit of comparing ourselves to our blogging peers – I believe this is something creatives (you tubers/photographers/models/etc -do often- not good. Therefore, It helps to know your goal and track your progress because at the end of the day you know what your end goal is and understanding that progress wether small or big is still progress is of outmost importance. Don’t rush it.
3. AUTHENTICITY IS KEY
If you aren’t sure about what you want to blog about or what niché you want to go into- don’t start a blog. Else, you will end up confused and frustrated. This was my case at the beginning of my blogging journey. I knew I was a good writer – but what & who I wanted to write to – I had no idea and this made me take so many unnecessary breaks. I could have avoided this by figuring out myself first.
4. YOU WON’T MAKE MONEY QUICKLY & It’S EXPENSIVE TO RUN A ‘QUALITY BLOG’
Themes, domains, site security, quality pictures you name it- it’s costly if you want to run a quality blog! If you are looking into making money from your blog then you definitely have to have a self hosted site or own a domain. Yes, blogger/wordpress hosted blogs are cute but those aren’t taken seriously anymore. I read in a recent article by dreamhost that brands/sponsors look to work with authentic self owned blogs. Branding is important because of the credibility you attain, it increases your visibility on the net and establishes a ground for you to make money and the truth is it costs money to make all this happen. So my advice would be save up before you dive into the blogging world.
I’m not trying to keep anyone from pursuing their dreams. I’m just trying to answer all the questions I get about my blogging journey at once. It’s not easy, it’s not always fun, but no success comes without a great cost. Regardless of what you decide , get really acquainted with your “why.” You are definitely going to need it.
